Switzerland
Swatch was launched in 1983 as a low-cost, high-quality Swiss quartz watch, engineered by Ernst Thomke, Jacques Müller, and Elmar Mock to use far fewer parts than conventional watches. Backed by Nicolas Hayek, who built ASUAG and SSIH's merger into what became the Swatch Group, the colorful plastic Swatch is widely credited with helping the Swiss watch industry survive the quartz crisis.
