Citizen was founded in Tokyo in 1918 and took its name — meant to signal a watch for ordinary citizens — when the Citizen Watch Co. was formally established in 1930. The brand pioneered Eco-Drive light-powered quartz technology in 1976 and remains one of Japan's largest watchmakers.
