How to Buy a Watch Online Safely: A Step-by-Step Checklist

Buying a watch online gives you more choice and often better prices than a local shop, but it also removes the chance to inspect the watch in person. A little discipline makes up for that. The goal is to verify two things: that the seller is trustworthy and that the watch is exactly what the listing claims.

Start with the seller. Authorised dealers are the safest option for new watches, as you get the manufacturer warranty and a clear return path. For pre-owned pieces, favour established dealers with a long track record, visible reviews and a written return policy. On marketplaces, look at the seller's history, how long they have been active and whether past buyers mention honest descriptions.

Then study the listing. Good sellers show many sharp photos of the dial, case sides, caseback, clasp and any box or papers. Be wary of stock images on pre-owned listings, vague condition notes and photos that hide the caseback or the crown. Ask for extra pictures or a short video. A genuine seller will not mind, and a refusal tells you something.

Check the reference number against the catalogue. Compare case size, dial details and bracelet type with the entry in our catalogue, because mismatched parts such as a wrong dial, hands or replacement bracelet are common in the second-hand market. If the serial or reference is not shown, ask for it.

Protect your payment. Use a method with buyer protection, such as a credit card or a reputable escrow service, and avoid bank transfers to individuals or anything that cannot be reversed. A price that is far below the usual range is a warning sign rather than a bargain.

Finally, confirm the practicalities before you pay: who covers shipping and insurance, how long you have to return the watch, whether the warranty is transferable, and what customs or import taxes may apply. Keep all messages and listing screenshots until the watch has arrived and you are happy with it.
